Will Power wins final Champ Car race
Australian driver Will Power sped past higher qualified cars at the start of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, remaining firmly in control of the contest throughout the majority of the race. The victory, the last in the Champ Car World Series, is Power’s third in Champ Car. In 2007, Power was the winner at Las Vegas and Toronto. With this win, Power jumps to fifth in the IndyCar Series overall standings.
“The car was nice. It just all fell together, you know? It was just a relaxing race. I was very focused on what I was doing,” said Power. “At the end there, it was just, ‘Don’t make any mistakes, bring it home’. Actually an alarm came up on the dash. I was like, ‘OK, I can’t believe it, five laps to go or something’. But it was nothing.”
“I really enjoyed it, and I’m glad to enjoy my last Champ Car race,” added Power.
Finishing second was Forsythe/Pettit Racing’s French driver, Franck Montagny, who like many Champ Car racers will not drive for the rest of the year due to his owner’s decision not to compete in IndyCar.
The final spot on the podium was occupied by Mexican Mario Dominguez, who brought Pacific Motorsports its first and last podium spot as a Champ Car team.
Polesitter Justin Wilson, who was heavily favored to win, retired early with mechanical failure, and a sure disappointment for Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing. Fan favorite Paul Tracy had a tough day at the office with tire failure out on the track among other problems.
Returning champion Jimmy Vasser did not embarrass himself with a 10th place finish. He did have a bit of aid in the form of Tom Anderson whom called the race for him from the KV team’s pit box. A return to the championship days for the two men.
The same cannot be said for Graham Rahal, who spun earlier in the race, and then on the final lap, he stuffed his Panoz DP01 into the tire barrier.
All in all, the series goes out on a high note with this race. Whether or not Power’s win means he will have a very smooth transition as an IndyCar driver remains to be seen. True or not, it seems that the future of open wheel racing begins today with the final race of Champ Car.
