Mayfield released by Haas CNC Racing

Jeremy Mayfield has not had the best of luck in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and as of today, he is out of ride and looking yet again. Just two days after racing at Texas Motor Speedway, Haas CNC Racing announced that the team has “parted ways” with Mayfield.

“Jeremy’s proven resume behind the wheel of a Cup car was a real benefit to our team,” team general manager Joe Custer said. “He stepped into the seat and did everything we asked him to and more.

Mayfield started 39th on the 43-car filed and finished just one position higher in 38th, ten laps shy of the race winner, Carl Edwards. He lost three standing positions and moved to 36th with 490 points.

Mayfield has not been one of the top contenders this season with Custer stating, “Ultimately, we were unable to provide him with the right balance, handling and speed he needed to be successful.”

The Kentuckian started his Cup career in 1994, his debut race was in ‘93. His rookie season was with Sadler Brothers Ford, never taking a top-10 finish. He ended the season driving for Cale Yarborough. From there he started car-hopping. Michael Kranefuss knew the young driver due to the Ford connection and he finished out the ‘96 season with Kranefuss’ team — driver swap between the teams involved John Andretti.

Mayfield’s first top-10 came on July 16 in ‘95 at the Miller 500 on the Dover oval, finishing eighth. One year later, he earned his first top-5 when he took fifth at Pocono Raceway. His career was on an upswing, earning his first Cup series pole later that same season.

With his first win under his belt in 1998 (Pocono) with Penske Racing South, Mayfield became a hot property in the late 90s. Staying with Dodge, he was one of the top competitors in Cup racing. His last win on the Cup circuit came in 2005 at Michigan International Speedway with Evernham Motorsports.

Mayfield landed his third career top ten finish taking 9th in the final standings. The next year, his ride with Evernham fell apart when after only 17 starts and a dismal performance, he was again without a ride. Word out at that time that Mayfield had already entered into talks with Bill Davis Racing and complained about the missing Evernham in his pit box during races.

He started the ‘07 season with Bill Davis Racing. After only 17 starts with his new team, he was again without a ride. In October, 2007, Haas CNC Racing signed Mayfield.

With the first seven races now in the book for the 2008 season, Mayfield is again looking for a ride.

“We wish Jeremy nothing but the best for his future,” added Custer.
