Smets competes in Australia

Smets will ride the new BMW G 450 X before it is released for sale worldwide.

He will be in Australia for one week to race the April 17-20 event at Warragul in Victoria. He has previously competed in Australia in the Thumpernats series, a World MX Championship round and the International Six Day Enduro, with an L plate on his bike.

Smets was part of the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team in 2007 that took the 450cc prototype to several rounds of the World Enduro Championships, scoring World Championship points on debut in Puerto Lumbreras, Spain in May, and finishing sixth overall.

The team’s maiden win came late in the season, with Simo Kirssi claiming overall victory in the European Cross Country championships at Schefflenz, Germany.

The BMW Motorrad Motorsport team will campaign a full season of WEC in 2008, as well as contesting the German Cross-Country Championships.

At round one of the 2008 WEC, team rider Anders Eriksson finished fourth, just missing the podium at his home round in Sweden’s snowy conditions.

The BMW G 450 X race bike will feature only a performance exhaust modification.

BMW Motorrad Australia marketing manager Miles Davis said the G 450 X would go on sale in Australia towards the latter part of the year.
