Ingall wants V8s to get real on GP or go home
HOLDEN veteran Russell Ingall has called for V8 Supercar organisers to “wake up” and make the V8s’ involvement at the Australian Grand Prix a championship round or stop coming to Albert Park.
“All this artificial stuff with half-a-million dollar cars is just not on — there’s just too many cars getting damaged,” Ingall said after yesterday’s race two, in which five cars failed to finish. “If they want to put on a show they should just get a heap of one-make cars, throw the drivers in them and we’ll put on some entertainment.
“Either play the game and put a proper race on or stop coming here. Wake up. We’re beyond being a celebrity race, we’re a national and international championship. I think the sponsors get their money’s worth at normal rounds.”
For his part, fellow Holden driver Garth Tander has welcomed the timing of the non-championship round after he again led from start-to-finish yesterday, improving his confidence in his ability to defend his title after a less-than-ideal start.
Tander had a horror opening round in Adelaide before clawing back some points at Eastern Creek last weekend to be sitting in eighth position on 326 points behind championship leader Jamie Whincup (540).
Tander said his Holden Racing Team had worked hard to find an improved set-up for the next championship round — the inaugural street race in Hamilton, New Zealand, next month.
“We’ve had a great run this weekend (but) we’ve known all along that the grand prix is not for points,” Tander said. “We’re learning lots so we’ll just use it for what’s it’s worth and do our best for Holden.”
Tander started on pole after winning Friday’s opening race and remained in control. The race was placed under a caution on lap seven when Paul Dumbrell slammed into a tyre barrier after passing Jason Bright. It remained under the control of the pace car for four laps as officials cleared the wreckage.
Tander had a terrific restart and opened a handy gap and was not troubled for the remainder of the 15-lap race as Ford drivers Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom engaged in an entertaining duel with Davison hanging on for second.
Tander criticised organisers for using tyre bundles — the moveable rubber markers placed on the circuit designed to stop drivers from taking shortcuts through corners. When hit, they can move into the middle of the track, creating an obstacle.
“It’s ridiculous the way they are just sitting there on the circuit,” Tander said. “Either have them and fix them in properly or just get rid of them. This is the 21st century. They just shouldn’t be here.”
