BMW global sales rise 3% from a year ago on demand for convertible


FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) _ BMW AG said Tuesday demand for its 3-series convertible helped drive up April sales worldwide by three per cent from a year ago.

The Munich-based automaker said that its three brands _ BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce _ sold a combined 118,456 cars last month. Sales of the BMW 3 Series Cabrio in April rose to 5,189 from 2,562 a year earlier, while sales of the 3-series coupe grew nearly fourfold to 6,819 from 1,817 a year ago.

The company sold 8,635 of the BMW X5 last month, up 45.6 per cent from 5,941 in April 2006. The company’s 5-series sales rose nearly one per cent to 18,254 cars sold compared with 18,096 a year ago.

BMW’s new generation Mini was also in demand, with sales up 19.2 per cent in April to 18,263 cars, from 15,323 a year earlier.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars delivered 52 Phantoms in April, up two per cent from the 51 it sold last year.

BMW sold 12,320 motorcycles, up one per cent from a year earlier.

Shares of BMW were down nearly 0.8 per cent to 47.42 euros ($64.56).
